Unless you want to pay someone to do it for you, mowing the lawn at home is something you’ll need to get used to doing yourself so let’s take a look around at some of the most popular choices of mowers for the typical suburban household.
Due to the fact that I ran a small business and I needed strong reliable mowers that could run all day long, I never used electric mowers commercially, but I think they are great for the average household. The reason I say this is because they are clean and quiet to run and they basically cost nothing after the initial purchase of the machine.
There are less moving parts when compared to gas powered mowers and this means no spark plugs to change, no oil to fill and no gas needed to power these guys. If it’s corded just plug it in, if its battery operated, just charge it up and away you go. The only things you will need to worry about maintaining are the blades and you can buy a new set of those for under $10.
There is a lot to be said about the eco friendly and quiet nature of these machines also. Since it burns no gas, there is no gas smell and therefore no pollution emitted into the environment. You can also get out there early on a Sunday morning and get the grass cut without worrying so much about the noise disturbing the neighbors.
Now there are basically 2 categories of electric mowers so let’s take a look at each one and see which one suits you.
Electric Lawn Mower Comparison Table

Corded Electric Mowers
Corded electric lawn mowers were the first generation of this category and were the best electric lawn mowers on the market for a long time, and have really come a long way. You can get cords that reach up 100 feet and if you need to and you can always improvise with a few extension cords. Be aware though that the longer standard cord is the more the mower will cost.
Due to the more direct power supply when compared to a battery powered electric lawn mower, corded variants generally have more power and therefore they can handle the extra load for tasks such as mulching. You can also generally get a bigger cutting deck with means you can cover more area in one pass.
The cord is a major issue for me. If you have a yard with trees and obstacles you will be getting caught up and tangled all over the place. I also think there is large risk of running over the cord.
Cordless Battery Powered
Cordless electric mowers are typically powered by NiCad or Lead acid accumulator batteries that are generally 24 or 36 volt. These mowers have the advantage of having the same attributes that a gas mower has but the benefits of being electric such as being eco friendly, quite and maintenance free. They are the perfect option for a typical suburban yard and you can easily deal with trees and other obstacles without getting tangled.
The bigger the battery the more power, torque and battery life you get. You can also get these in self propelled versions which are great in my opinion.
No cord means no tangles or running over it!
The battery…… The more tasks you make it do the less effective it becomes. For example, if you hook up a mulcher and you have a self propelled model and some hills to deal with, you will generally notice a decrease in power and battery life. And when that battery runs out with more grass to cut you’re in trouble unless you have a spare!
Electric Lawn Mower Reviews
While there are hundreds of current models on the market today here are some very reliable mowers that are worth your consideration. I will never recommend mowers that I would not buy myself, and I like to find a great mower for a great price, or cheaper if I can.
I have to say that I think the GeenWorks mowers always look great. This model is a corded mower powered by a 12 amp motor and features a 20 inch cutting deck. It comes with a grass catcher and falls into the 3 in 1 category. There are 7 different cutting heights for this model ranging from 1.5 inches up to 3.75 inches and the total weight of this machine is 56 pounds.
You need to buy a separate cord for this model as the chord is far too short but you can pick one these up when you purchase the mower for an additional $15 – $30 depending on the type of chord you want.
The GreenWorks 25022 comes with a 4 year warranty which is double the industry standard and is reasonably priced making it a very good option if you want to go with a solid corded mower.
The Worx WG782 is a cordless battery powered mower that is driven by a 24 volt battery. It comes with a 14 inch cutting deck and is also a 3 in 1 model so you have the options of side and rear grass discharge along with a grass catcher.
It comes with an electric start which means no pull cords and is backed by a 2 year warranty. The battery generally lasts around 40 minutes and the weight of this machine is around 30 pounds.
This mower also comes with a feature called “Intellicut” which automatically senses and ads extra power when required to get through those extra tough spots.
The cordless battery powered Black & Decker CM1936 features a 36 volt removable battery which is great as you can buy additional batteries and simply change them out to get more mowing time for bigger areas.
The cutting deck size is 19 inches and the weight of this machine is 72 pounds, making it a little heavier on average than other mowers in this category.
It comes with 1 touch blade adjustment that will automatically adjust the mowing height on all four wheels. This machine also comes with a catcher and a mulcher giving you a host of options when it comes to grass clipping disposal.
This model comes with the standard 2 year warranty.
Another mean green machine, the GreenWorks G-Max is a cordless powered battery operated machine that comes in three different cutting deck sizes, 16 inch, 19 inch and 20 inch. The features of this model grow along with the size with the price ranging from around $269 to $359 for the different variants.
The 20 inch model comes with both a rear bag and mulching capabilities and also duel batteries to give you up to 70 minutes of running time. Another great inclusion with this mower is the “smart cut” technology which allows for more power to be automatically introduced where required to get through tough or long patches of grass.
All these models are also backed by the GreenWorks 4 year warranty.
Another cordless battery operated mower, the Worx WG775 Lil’Mo has a 14 inch cutting deck and is powered by a 24V removable battery. The cutting heights range from 1.8 inches up to 3.3 inches and starting this guy is a breeze with its push button start technology.
It’s a small and light machine weighing in at only 33 pounds but it also comes with the ability to have a catcher and a mulcher so you can cover all bases with this machine. It also features the “Intellicut” technology to automatically adjust power as required.
The price is around $200 and it comes with a 2 year warranty. Don’t let the small size of this machine fool you as this is a very solid mower. It’s small and light and with an extra battery you should have no problems getting through the average sized lawn.
How to Choose the Best Electric Lawn Mower For You
Here is a video with some things you need to think about before you purchase a new mower which compliment these electric lawn mower reviews very well.
Corded or battery powered
If you have trees and obstacles in your yard that will cause tangles a cord is not for you. Also if you are worried that the battery life of a cordless mower will not be long enough you need to look at either a corded or gas mower unless you want to purchase additional batteries.
Get More Than Enough Power
In conjunction with the first point, make sure you will have enough power and battery to do the job properly. If you’re not sure, either do some more research or skip that particular type or model of mower. Can you can buy an extra battery and keep 2 batteries charged?
Size and space
How much room do you have to manoeuvre the machine around? Corded models can be very cheap, small and light so that may suit you perfectly for a small courtyard.
Do you want a Grass Catcher?
2 in 1 models typically come with a rear and side discharge chute whereas a 3 in 1 model will also come with a grass catcher so you can dispose of you grass clippings wherever you want.
What attachments does it come with?
If you want to mulch the grass as you cut it you will possibly need to buy an extra attachment so check to make sure the model you want to buy comes with all the attachments you need. If not factor in the cost of buying the extras you need.
Price is always an issue and if there are 2 identical mowers it is only wise to pick the cheaper one.
Warranties and Service Work
I tend to only use and recommend mowers that are manufactured by large and trusted manufactures as they generally have good warranties and can be relied upon.
Take some time to think about your yard and really think about what impact having a chord will imply. Will you trip over it, get it tangled or run over it?
Over to you
Over the years I have seen the rise of electric mowers and I have no doubt that the self propelled battery powered variants of these machines are the future of lawn mowers. Not only for domestic household mowers but commercially also. Right now the main restriction I see is all to do with the battery. Once better batteries are developed and these mowers can run all day long in tough conditions, gas mowers will be a thing of the past.
